Synopsis

Based on Morton Feldman’s “Madame Press Died Last Week at Ninety”, Seems To Be plays with the levels of optic and aural perception, with the deception of eyes and ears as well as the tension between two-dimensional reproduction and three-dimensional spatial recreation.

For the film & music project Free Radicals, Bady Minck realises the two short films Being and Nothingness and Seems To Be together in the shorter version with live-music from Klangforum Wien performed in concert halls. The principal performers of both films are the musicians of Klangforum Wien together with composer and conductor Beat Furrer.

Accompanied by murmuring, the sound of scribbling and hummed snatches of music, the camera sweeps over a collection of materials on a desktop, seemingly reflecting a creative frenzy. Musical notes and memoranda, pads and pencils, patterns of various kinds, mixed with slips of paper, half-full Martini glasses, ashtrays, death’s heads—then the picture swings around (the coffee cup along with it!) and an ensemble arranged according to musical instrument has been committed to paper. Constant movement, metamorphosis, variation and pleasant uncertainty: a concert hall? A movie theater?
The picture’s square remains, becoming in the course of the switch a bright square within the picture: a projection screen with an ensemble in the form of a projection screen in front of the ensemble, which is suddenly no more than a shadow of itself. Madame Press is dead. The imagination lives on. At least that seems to be the case.

A meditation on the certainties of being and perceptual illusions, a circling search in time and space, and at the same time a trompe l’oeil; the spatial dimensions of Morton Feldman’s steady, apparently timeless music are taken literally in the film: The sketched arrangement of a musical ensemble about to perform Feldman’s composition fills with ‘real’ musicians caught in the paper’s two-dimensionality, only to move to the spatiality of the Vienna Konzerthaus. But what is real here, what is a visual fake? “Seems To Be” dances on this platform of ambivalences, juxtaposing the metaphysics of a solid existential foundation and the agnostic skepticism of an abandonment of being marked by a visual chimera. Godless Feldman, merciless abyss! What we see is looking back at us.

Free Radicals: Kunstmatch zwischen Musik und Film
Man sah zunächst den Komponisten Beat Furrer mit seiner Partitur in einer Filmprojektion, dann kam er auch schon aufs Podium, um mit seinem “Lied, das über das Ende des Liedes hinaus ein anderes Ende finden wollte” zu eröffnen. Zugleich flimmerte der Film “Das Sein und das Nichts” über die Leinwand und zeigte, wie die Musiker vor der im Hintergrund ablaufenden Partitur spielten und synchron zu ihren Einsätzen ein- und ausgeblendet wurden.
Der Verdacht, dass die mit Bernhard Zachhuber vom Klangforum für das Konzept verantwortliche Bady Minck ihre witzigen Arbeiten, die den Abend einrahmten, in gutem Licht erscheinen lassen wollte, würde zu kurz greifen. Dennoch waren ihre Filme die schlüssigsten, die, auf unaufdringliche Weise selbstreflexiv, zuerst Dirigent und Ensemble auf die Leinwand projizierten, dann in “Schein Sein” ein Blatt Papier auf dem Schreibtisch der Filmemacherin zur Bühne machten und Momentaufnahmen aus ungewohnter Perspektive zeigten.
Der Umstand, dass der erste und letzte Film nicht nur eng an die Musik – zuletzt von Feldman – angelehnt waren, sondern auch mit Abstand die längsten visuellen Programmpunkte, holte das Experiment wieder auf sicheren Boden zurück.

In Bady Mincks Film Schein Sein ist der Ansatz kein analytischer – das Stück „Madame Press Died Last Week at Ninety“ von Morton Feldman steht eher für meditative Musik. Die Filmemacherin verändert unmerklich die Kulisse, von einer Aufstellungsskizze zum realen Ensemble, vom Spielen in einem leeren Saal zu einem gut besuchten Konzert. Die Musik zieht derweil ihre eigenen Bahnen – losgelöst vom realen Umfeld.

Morton Feldman’s “Madame Press Died Last Week at 90” is more sober and constricted than Mr. Furrer’s score. It revolves mostly around two repeated chords, and its instrumental textures are comparatively steady. In Schein Sein (“Seems to Be”), Ms. Minck again shows the players as they drop in and out of the score, but she also pulls back to show the musicians on the screen, the screen on a stage and the stage in a hall with an audience. It was an appealing if self- conscious solution, if making the films a matched set was the goal.

Ici le temps devient espace Schein Sein de Bady Minck interroge à plusieurs niveaux l’acte de composition et les potentialités de la musique. Après une première mondiale fort remarquée à la Berlinale allemande en février dernier, Bady Minck présente ce week-end à la Philharmonie du Kirchberg son nouveau film Schein Sein (Être paraître), dans le cadre d’une soirée de films d’avant-garde intitulée Free Radicals. Poursuivant un travail des plus poussés sur les interactions entre le visuel et le sonore, la réalisatrice luxembourgeoise bien connue du grand public, propose à nouveau une œuvre subtile et maîtrisée.

Qui connaît sa précédente réalisation Das Sein und das Nichts (L’Être et le Néant, 2007), retrouvera dans ce nouvel opus les mêmes fils conducteurs. D’une durée ramassée, le déroulement se construit sur la musique remarquable et trop méconnue de Morton Feldman, compositeur américain mort en 1987. Ce choix philosophique s’avère d’autant plus judicieux que l’univers sonore de Feldman entretient des correspondances ténues avec les arts plastiques, tel qu’en témoigne entre autres sa superbe pièce Rothko Chapel, sorte de mélopée calquée sur un cycle de peintures du peintre Mark Rothko. Interprétée par le Klangforum Wien sous la direction de Beat Furrer, c’est à la partition Madame Press Died Last Week at Ninety qu’a fait appel Bady Minck. Intercalés dans un jeu de plans et de reliefs architecturaux, les instrumentistes du fameux ensemble, la musique aux allures « becketiennes » et le public constituent les principaux protagonistes d’une véritable fiction synesthésique.

Il entretient des correspondances ténues avec les arts plastiques, tel qu’en témoigne entre autres sa superbe pièce Rothko Chapel, sorte de mélopée calquée sur un cycle de peintures du peintre Mark Rothko. Sans dévoiler ici la trame de ce film à découvrir absolument et qui occupe le centre d’une longue soirée de concerts et de projections avec, en prélude, une table ronde sur les interactions entre les arts dans la culture contemporaine, Schein Sein interroge à plusieurs niveaux l’acte de composition et les potentialités de la musique. Comment le son devient espace par le truchement de l’image ? Un projet traversant de manière sinueuse tout le XXe siècle. Ainsi, déjà Richard Wagner en 1882 invoquait explicitement ce théorème en faisant déclarer à l’un des personnages de son dernier festival sacré Parsifal « Ici le temps devient espace ». Plus tard, l’éminent compositeur et maître à penser Arnold Schönberg, lorsqu’il décrira en fin de carrière la genèse et la table des lois de son procédé d’écriture dodécaphonique, expliquera quant à lui : « L’unité de l’espace musical exige une perception absolue et unitaire. Dans cet espace, il n’existe pas de dessous, pas de droite ou de gauche, ni de marche avant ou arrière. Chaque configuration musicale, chaque mouvement de sons doit être compris avant tout comme un rapport interchangeant de sonorités, d’oscillations apparaissant en différents endroits et à différents moments ». Sans appartenir a priori à telle ou autre filiation, la recherche de Bady Minck s’inscrit toutefois dans cette longue histoire, que le cinéma expérimental des premières décennies du siècle passé ou de la période psychédélique autour de 1968 aura lui aussi amplement brassé, et qu’elle pousse dans de nouveaux retranchements.

En cette phase actuelle marquée par la réaffirmation des catégories artistiques, telle que la peinture, au sein d’un questionnement toujours aussi insistant sur les frontières entre chaque disciplines, des oeuvres comme Das Sein und das Nichts ou Schein Sein, sortes de manifestes compacts, montrent que le débat est loin d’être clôt.
